Timothy Verdon in L'Osservatore Romano: In the Supper of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Christ opens his arms in the gesture he made the following day, on the cross. Leonardo conceived of the pose of Christ as a function of the next action in the sacred drama, which is depicted on the opposite wall of the refectory. The majestic psychological presence, the unfathomably interiority are attributes of someone who contemplates and accepts his own death.
