Nederlandse première St. John Passion - MacMillan

Vrijdag 3 en zondag 5 april 2009 speelt het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest geen Bach, maar St. John Passion van James MacMillan. Een Nederlandse première o.l.v. Sir Colin Davis met Tommi Hakala (bariton).

James MacMillan: After writing my Seven Last Words from the Cross in 1993, I always knew that the inevitable next step would be a setting of one of the Gospel Passion narratives. It has since been my ambition to tackle such a project. I decided on St John's text, as it is the version with which I am most intimately acquainted, hearing it recited or sung every Good Friday in the Catholic liturgy. In fact, since my student days in Edinburgh I have regularly participated in the Gregorian or Dominican chanting of the Crucifixion story on that day. This simple music has had an overriding influence on the shape and character of my own Passion setting.

I was frightened that might even have been going to happen in Australia. Now I think we've avoided the worst there. I think we've stabilised the situation.

De in 1801 geboren anglicaan en hoogleraar te Oxford begon als bestrijder van liberalisme en vrijzinnigheid. In 1845 ging hij over tot de kerk van Rome.
Newman staat model voor de denkende christen. Geloof en rede vormen voor hem een hechte eenheid. In zijn eentje onderzocht hij de geschiedenis van de kerk, de concilies, de kerkvaders. Aan zijn grondige kennis van de klassieken paarde hij een buitengewone gevoeligheid voor het persoonlijk geweten. Praktisch alle literaire genres heeft hij beoefend. Newmans veelzijdigheid en heldere stijl maken hem toegankelijk voor iedere lezer.

Madre della Consolazione
Veneto-Cretan, 16e eeuw

The Mother of God is depicted half-length against a gold background. She wears a blue tunic and a purple ‘maphorion‘ (mantle), fastened at the chest. The borders of both her tunic and mantle are decorated with gold pseudo-Kufic inscriptions. A transparent white veil is draped over her hair. Holding Christ on her right arm, Mary gestures towards him by resting her hand lovingly on his left leg. Christ holds a closed scroll in one hand and makes a sign of blessing with the other. His face is turned towards the left. His undergarment is a dark blue tunic, decorated along its borders with gold. His orange-red robe has a refined pattern of gold highlights accentuating the fall of the folds. At his right upper arm, a part of his transparent white shirt is visible, reaching to his elbow.

The iconography of the Madre della Consolazione type is of Western origin. It has clearly been influenced by Italian prototypes from the 14th century. The icon’s Italian title refers to the suffering of Christ, as anticipated by his mother. This high quality example can be placed in the general context of Veneto-Cretan icons produced on the island of Crete during its Venetian occupation. The type was probably introduced to the Orthodox-Christian world by the famous icon painter Nikolaos Tzafouris in the second half of the 15th century; his oeuvre is typified by combined Byzantine and Italian iconographical types. Two icons of the Madre della Consolazione signed by him are known, one in a private collection in Trieste and the other in the Kanellopoulos Collection in Athens.

The Icon of the Madre della Consolazione, nearly always painted in a late Gothic style, became very popular in the 15th and 16th century in Italy. However, Italy was not the only important market for the icon painters. The fame of the Cretan icon painters reached far beyond the island’s shores. Cretan icons were exported to Mount Athos, Patmos, Rhodes, Cyprus, Cairo, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Sinai and even to Flanders.

SCENA POLSKA: De nieuwste, epische film van grootmeester Andrzej Wajda gaat niet zozeer over de massamoord van Katyn, als wel over de cynische leugen waarmee talloze Poolse families tot 1990 moesten leven.
Op 1 september 1939 viel het Duitse leger Polen binnen; op 17 september bezetten troepen van de Sovjet-Unie de oostelijke helft, waarna 22.000 Poolse officieren en soldaten opgesloten werden in concentratiekampen in Rusland. Op bevel van Stalin werden de meesten in april en mei 1940 gefusilleerd, in de bossen bij Katyn. De Duitsers ontdekten de massagraven in 1943. De Sovjets ontkenden de feiten en gaven met vervalste documentatie de schuld aan de Duitsers. De Poolse Geheime Dienst handhaafde deze fictie na WO II met harde hand.
