Zaterdag 17 januari viert de ZaterdagMatinee alvast de vijftigste verjaardag van de Schotse componist James MacMillan tijdens een ‘dubbelconcert’ (12.00 uur en 14.15 uur) in het Concertgebouw te Amsterdam. Niet alleen de Schotse volksmuziek en de vroege Engelse (O bone Jesu, 2002) en Vlaamse polyfonie vormden inspiratiebronnen voor MacMillan. Ook twintigste-eeuwse componisten als Benjamin Britten en Dmitri Sjostakovitsj zijn voor hem grote voorbeelden. Tijdens de viering van zijn vijftigste verjaardag komen deze componisten samen in één programma onder leiding van de jarige zelf. Als afsluiting wordt Seven Last Words from the Cross uit 1993 uitgevoerd. Deze compositie wordt nog altijd beschouwd als een van MacMillans beste werken. Hij componeerde het in opdracht van de BBC voor zeven verschillende tv-episodes in de Goede Week voor Pasen in 1994.

Good Friday Versicle
Christ’s words are kept until the very end of the movement when they are sung by two high sopranos, accompanied by high violins. The rest of the piece is a setting of the Good Friday Versicle Ecce Lignum Crucis. During the liturgy this is normally sung three times, each time at a higher pitch as the cross is slowly unveiled and revealed to the people. Here also the music begins with two basses, rises with the tenors and then again with two altos. A high violin solo features throughout.
